www.pioneerlocal.com - The Gay Games may be interested in holding events in Oak Park, but there may not be much room for them.
At a meeting of the District 200 School Board Nov. 10, Superintendent Susan Bridge told school trustees that the dates the games will be in Chicago, July 15-22, are the peak of the school's summer camp season.
"We're trying our best to be cooperative," Bridge said. "There does not seem to be flexibility in the event. We're still looking."
Event times are between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m., operations Assistant Superintendent Jack Lanenga told trustees. The best possibility the school has to host an event would be badminton, with possibly space in three gyms.
"We can't give up the field house," Lanenga said. "The south field is used virtually the entire day."
In the stadium field, he said, the football team is usually conditioning.
The Park District of Oak Park has been contacted with a broad request on facility availability, Director Gary Balling said. The park district has camps, as well.
"Can we turn a swimming pool over to any one group for a week? We can't do that," Balling said. "Can we turn a group of tennis courts over to one group for a week? That would be real difficult. Can we find a couple of hours here and there? We can probably manage something like that."
Oak Park Area Convention and Visitors Bureau CEO Rich Carollo, who is working on getting some Gay Games events into the village, has met with the park district and high school to sort out possible facility use.
He has also contacted Concordia University in River Forest about the games using its facilities for track and field, but Carollo in an e-mail on Monday said the university would not provide access to its facilities for the games.
Swim, swim, swim! Now that we are swimming at our replacement pool pratice is back on. Today the coach divided the lanes between those swimming at Regionals this weekend and those who are not. Thank God I was in the Regional lane since the pool was sooo hot and after not swimming for a week I was a bit stiff. Here is the workout from what I remember: 500 free warm up 300 IM kick, drill, swim warm up 200 for time 6x50’s 6x50’s praticing off the blocks, relay starts and regular starts. warmdown 100
I think we did more than that but I can never remember. The pool was too warm like bath water and the air was so thick it was hard to breathe. But a workout is a workout.
So everytime I go to these Masters Swim Meets everyone has all these racing suits. I always sorta figured considering that I’m no Olympic swimmer what difference does it make if I wear a regular old suit or some super slick suit? Well I decided to take the plunge and order online the Speedo Aquablade Brief. According to Speedo:
* Exclusive to Speedo®. Unique Aquablade fabric offers lower drag co-efficient and is slicker than skin! * Stripes create channeling effect to streamline water away from the body * Reinforced seams * Fully front lined * Non-slip drawstring * Superior, chlorine-resistant 80% Polyester/20% Lycra® spandex. Import
I’ll let you guys now if I drop that much time this weekend when I wear the new suit. Who knows, I might go out and order 10 more of them if it works!
The first post Holiday weekend work out! Wahoo! I know I should probably not be doing weights since I’m swimming at a regional masters meet this weekend but considering that our swim pool is closed and we start swimming maybe at a temporary pool I wanted to do some sort of workout. Any ways here is my regular workout that I did today, need to get a training session so I can mix it up.
