Friday swim workout is the hardest work out of the week. Not only is the body tired from a week worth of working out and daily life the workout is just tougher.
When it comes to workout my body doesn’t transition well when in the same set is mixed stroke and free. On Wednesday I did most of the workout butterfly without any problem. Today on the other hand going from IM to Free I was slowly dying.
After showering and running to the pool I did a mixed 400 warmup. Since only two fast swimmers showed up we had our own lane. “J” lead the lane and I followed. “J” started swimming about six months after I did and moved from the medium lane to the fast lane pretty quick. For the longest time I was a bit faster than him but no more. He went from being about my equal to just speeding past me. When we do the ten 100’s set once a month my average is faster but workout wise he is faster. He is swimming five workouts a week and it is showing. I am sure when he is at Nationals he’ll being doing personal best times in everything he swim.
We did one warmup set starting with four 50’s drill on 50 seconds. I did these butterfly and backstroke and they were touch and go. Then we did a 200 swim which I did it by 25 butterfly, backstroke and freestyle mixed. Following that we did two 100’s kick on 2 minutes and finished up with another 200 swim.
6x75 Yards on 1:10 Butterfly/Backstroke/Backstroke. Okay really the last 25 was to be breaststroke but I don’t do breaststroke on any interval.
6x100 Yards Freestyle on 1:20/1:15/1:15 repeat. The first two were continuos for me but by the last one I was getting more than 5 seconds rest. It takes a while for my body to get going.
4x75 Yards on 1:10 Backstroke/Backstroke/Freestyle. Skipped the breaststroke again.
4x100 Yards Freestyle on 1:20/1:15/1:15/1:15. This round was easier than the first. But I was feeling some pain in my arm.
2x75 Yards on 1:10 Backstroke/Freestyle/Butterfly.
2x100 Yards Freestyle first one on 1:20 then fast for the last one. I did the last one on 1:04. “J” did it on 1:03. Proof that he is now must lead!
150 Yards Freestyle on 2:00
4x25 Yards Free on 25
150 Yards Freestyle on 2:00
4x25 Yards Stroke on 25. I did these butterfly.
150 Yards Freestyle on 2:00
4x25 Yards choice on 25. I did these butterfly.
And that was it. I only warmed down a 50. After that it was time to get back on the bike and go home.
After 17 years of age group swimming and almost 3 years of Masters swimmer I always found it strange that people showered before getting in a pool. It’s just not me most swimmers feel above the rule that is posted at every pool and just hop in the water without showering. I only bring this up because one of the pools our team uses is making everyone shower before entering the pool. By the way if you ever want to hear a bunch of adults moan and whine at 6am ask them to shower before entering an outdoor pool. Being on the board of my team I had to stand on deck and remind everyone to shower and boy did every single person complain. Oy vey!
So I am asking you swimmers out there who are reading this to comment to this post about showering. Do you shower or do you jump in dry?
I know there are real good reasons why we should shower and maybe just maybe if we all did shower we’d be helping the environment by using less chemicals in the pool. But considering most pools are maintained by high school or college kids who just dump the chemicals without measuring I think the issue is moot. Plus I’m not that dirty I just showered the day before.
While searching for more information on showering before swimming I found yet another swim blog. This swim blog bases out of Nashville by a swimmer who refers to himself as Splash Dog blogs “ Swimming is Easy - Here's How”. Check It Out! And anyone finds new swim blogs feel free to send me a quick email/comment.
After the morning swim it was time to change gears last night and get back in the pool for some water polo. With just five of us sitting on deck without our coach we decided to get in the water about 20 past the hour. After some passing and swimming eventually a total of 9 people showed up but no coach. We ended up scrimmaging about to 9:30 going four on four with one goalie only to the half.
That made for lots of scrimmage time for me which is a good thing. What was even better was that I got to do whole set for a bit getting some 1st time experience at that. Boy did I get globbered. The guy I was defending and defending against me was bigger, stronger and more experienced. A few times I got hit in the head so hard I saw stars. Actually stars like you see in cartoons I so thought I was going to wake up with a swollen black and blue face but fortunately survived with just being little red here and there.
This morning I slept in a bit then hit the gym just to do some circuit training and ab work. I was pretty quick in and out since I did both swim and water polo yesterday. By sleeping in just a little bit and getting to the gym maybe 30 minutes later than normal I realized made a difference in working out. The gym was busier than I’m use to seeing it. At least the parking lot was. At one point I thought the weight area was pretty busy but that was only for a few minutes.
Well I overslept and it’s been a crazy morning but in case you havn’t heard Michael Phelps broke yet another world record. According to my AP SMS Phone Alert Michael Phelps broke his own record in the 200 IM.
Also American Leila Vaziri equaled her world record in the 50 meter backstroke. These and more events will be televised later today on Fox Sports. Check Local Listings.
