Lane 1 - Stuff posts "Athletes draw eye. Some of New Zealand's up and coming
swimming stars are training at the Dargaville pool in the hopes of making it to the London Olympics. The athletes have locals looking on in admiration and youngsters getting inspired by their presence in Dargaville, resident Wayne Ryder says."
Lane 2 - ESPN W posts "Evans' comeback inspires on many levels. Janet Evans competed in her first Olympics in 1988, and at 40, she qualified for the Olympic trials over the weekend. What does her comeback bid say about age and competition? Age is just a number. What does Janet Evans' qualifying for the Olympic trials at age 40 say about age and competition? Absolutely nothing. If anything, it continues to perpetuate the adage that "age is just a number." We've reached the point where, if an athlete can perform, it really doesn't matter how old he or she is."
Lane 3 - The Huntsville TImes posts (scroll down page) "Titans Represent Madison at Master's National Championships. The 2011 Master's Long Course National Championships were held at Auburn University in August, and the Madison Titans (the Master's swimmers associated with MSA) sent their first contingent of four swimmers to compete at the national level. "We have a great nucleus of swimmers for such a small team," Titans coach Roger von Jouanne said. "These teammates deliver all of the competition that anyone could ask for, so if we're swimming against each other during workouts, we're automatically preparing to swim at the national level. And with the destruction of the long course pool in the April tornados, we are certainly grateful to the HSA Masters and their coach Brook Pate for inviting us into their long-course lanes for the entire summer."
Lane 4 - WUSA9 posts "Save UMD Smim Teams. Parents are trying to keep the University of Maryland's Swim and Dive teams afloat. A group of 7 made up of parents, alumni and coaches met with the university's athletic director, Kevin Anderson and his staff Tuesday night. The group that calls itself Save UMD Swim & Dive, Inc. is now a 501(c)3 non profit organization."
Lane 5 - ABC News posts "Shark Attack Closes World's Deadliest Beach. Surfers in South Africa will have to find another favorite spot to catch a wave after local authorities decided today to close down a beach that has become notorious for fatal shark attacks. The decision came two days after a man was killed on Sunday."
Lane 6 - Quick, call Craig Lord! The NY Times has "Boxers, Briefs or a Hybrid Sheath? The latest front in nefarious performance enhancement in sports: underwear. A fit of confusion has spread through competitive skiing in recent days after a Slovene skier who finished second at a major event in Austria was accused of wearing plastic undergarments that might have given her an unfair aerodynamic advantage." I normally don't post links to other blogs because I figure if you are reading this you already go to the other swim blogs but The Swim Brief has an interesting post today in "SUITS!".
Lane 7 - Melbourne Weekly posts "Sophie Edington takes a dive on January 26. WHILE most people will be spending Australia Day enjoying barbecues and beer, Sophie Edington will spend the day in her bathers. Aside from swimming in the Great Australia Day Swim from Middle Brighton Pier, the 27-year-old is in training for selection to the squad for the London Olympics."
Lane 8 - It's that time of the year again. Time for About.com's Swimming Readers' Choice Awards Nominations. I know I know, always a bridesmaid and never a bride. But I'm okay with that. "You can nominate items in each category:
swimsuits
goggles
hand paddles
training fins
on-line or brick and mortar swim shops
swimming twitter feed
swimming blog
You can only nominate once per item, please. Our swim experts will choose five nominees as finalists for each category for voting." So I did go and vote but not for Twitter or Blog. Most of my choices are the usual blah things but I'm asking everyone who is reading this to go vote now for Swimsuits and vote for SPLISH at splish.com. I love them so much I'd love to see them get to be one of the 5 noms. So go vote and vote often!
