Tuesday's Swim Report & The Biggest Loser Recap

The LA Marathon is over so it's time to get back in the pool and turn on the tv to watch The Biggest Loser.  While I was out killing myself running here are all the news that I missed -

1.  Everything you ever wanted to know about the Blueseventy Carbon RZR Goggles from azom.com who break the goggles down piece by piece.

Aquaman_bulge  2.  Gold Medal Mel has a great thread on swimming movies.  Oh and one last thing I want to say thanks to Mel and so many others who tweeted me good luck on my 1st Marathon!  Thanks Mel!

3.  I missed Garret Weber-Gale's Friday Food Fact!  He tells us why we should eat brown rice.  When I eat out I always order brown rice and people think I'm odd but once they taste it and realize it's not only better for you but taste better they are hooked.  Go Brown Rice!  Oh and Congrats to GWG to being appointed to the Texas Governor’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness!

4.  I love small town newspapers who honor US Master Swimmers so kudos to the Palm Beach Post profile Loring "Snag" Holmes on his entering Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame.

5.  Speaking of USMS News the Santa Clarita Valley's The Signal has a post on this past weekend's SPMA SCY swim meet in Santa Clarita.  GO SPMA!

Another LA Marathon comment:  Can I just say that I want to thank the good folks at who volunteered to hand out water, poweraid, banana's, oranges and so much more.  And thank you to the various companies along the way who handed out product.  Especially the fine folks from Sports Chalet who sprayed that magical pixie dust that gave me one of my 2nd winds!   Oh and to the regular folks who just came down at random spots handing out free water, oranges and stuff.  I LOVE LA!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

6.  Speaking of the SPMA Santa Clarita SCY swim meet my fellow swim bloggers Tony and Rob have some great posts on it.  Check out Tony's "So, today is the vernal equinox and I cellebrated the event at a swim meet!" LINK and "Most Photos from the Santa Clarita Meet!" LINK.  And Rob's "2010 Santa Clarita Masters SCY Meet Wrap Up" LINK.  Oh and the Rob for tweeting me good luck in my 1st Marathon!

7.  Congrats to swimmer blogger Alina over at Swimming For ME for her Top 10 in the WORLD FINA 35-39 50 M Freestyle Women Short Course award!  WAHOO!  I bow down to you!

8.  The folks at The Wobbly Block have "DISCOVERED: Presenter regrets pressing quick release button on Phelps' trouser".

Now for some The Biggest Loser news...

9.  The “Biggest Loser” class is being offered for a limited time only (3/20, 4/10, 5/8) as part of the “Open Door Saturday” promotion offered by 24 Hour Fitness.  The class combines cardio and strength training and is led by certified personal trainers. The exercises are designed to enhance agility, speed, power, strength and quickness.  For more information check out 24hourfitness.com.   I wanted to go on the 20th but with the LA Marathon I figured I should rest!  I will be attending the next one of course!

10.  The Baltimore Sun looks at the remaining contestants and calls the Biggest Loser a sob fest.  But in a good way!  And phillyBurbs.com sizes up the last 10.  Oh does this show have to end?  I want it on every week!  Well maybe just Bob can be on my television or bedroom.  Whichever he prefers.  Which I am sure is on the tele.

Disclaimer: None of the companies above provided me with anything.  I just wanted to say thanks to Sports Chalet, Nike, Kswiss and everyone involved or on the sidelines of the 2010 LA Marathon.  Especially that Male GoGo Dancer on the stage in West Hollywood...YUMMY!

2007 SCM 200 Butterfly

Joelonblock2 I finally got my hands on my 200 Butterfly from December's SCM SPMA Regionals.  Actually sorta by accident.  I kept bugging for a copy of the dvd to no avail then I borrowed a copy from a fellow swimmer.  But that dvd was so scratched up I couldn't even watch myself swim.  Well last weekend I videotaped a swim clinic and burnt dvd's of my fellow swimmers.  Today out of curiosity I started to view the various tapes in the bag and all of a sudden I see a someone doing the butterfly.  Wait that is the women's 200 butterfly!  My swim was next.  So i just loaded it up to my computer and posted it on youtube.  So finally 1 day short of 5 months from when I swam the 200 Butterfly here is the tape:

So Didn't Make The 07 Cut

The finalized 2007 USMS Top 10 Lists are out and although I was ranked number 10 in the preliminary 200 Butterfly list I got pushed out in the final list.  No biggie.  That is what you get when you only swim the event once in a SCM pool in a year.  My time was a 2:28.48 and the 10th fastest time was 2:26.62 a huge difference.  I still have my 2006's Top 10's to keep me motivated.  If I had only swam the 1500 SCM Free I would have been ranked 6th for the year.  Something to think about when I sign up for meets in the future.  Although I really don't plan on doing too many meets this year.  To be honest I don't like the experience of sitting around and waiting.  I get nervous and end up having to pee every 15 minutes.  I might just force myself to swim the one at UCLA next month.  It's a short meet and so close to home.

In other news I just went to the local USMS website http://spma.net and although they've yet to post the SCM Regional Top 10's they did post the SCY Regional Top 10's for 2007 and I have three top tens.  I think they all came from swimming at the UCLA last year.  For the 500 SCY Free I came in fourth regionally with a time of 5:28.06.  For the 100 SCY Back, wait I swam back and didn't get DQ'ed at the turn, I came in fourth regionally with a time of 1:02.66.  Then in the 100 SCY Fly I came in seventh regionally with a time of 1:00.46.

Okay that is enoguht to keep me motivated a few more months.

A Perfect Ten

You may say that you know Bo Derek and that Bo Derek is a friend of yours and I'm no Bo Derek but to that I say I'm still a 10.  Well maybe I'm just a 10th.  As the 2007 USMS Top Ten SCM for Men Ages 35-39 I'm 10th in the 200 Butterfly.  Considering I only swam one SCM swim meet and only two events I'm pretty happy with that.  Check out USMS for the full results.

The 200 Fly

Joelonblock2 Back in May at the USMS SCY Nationals when I swam the 200 Fly I went out too fast and just died at the end.    My arms were sore and my legs just had nothing left.  So this time I tried to pace myself.  After the 100 I took the 3rd 50 a bit slow.  Maybe too slow.  I felt good and strong the whole 200.  No dying, no tired arms or legs.  I don't think swimming the 200 butterfly only twice a year at a meet is teaching me how to swim the event correctly.  After my swim when I walked back to my team mates my coach and several people commented that I now need to break the 2:25 mark in the SCM 200 Fly.  Oy!  The next SCM meet will be in June in Washington, DC.  Just enough time to do lots and lots of fly in workout!
