Back In The Pool After 20 Days Off Workout

The last time I went for a swim was September 1st!  I'm such a slacker!  Mind you I'm not really a slacker as I teach spinning, weight training, pilates and a bunch of other classes and do personal Sundaytraining 6 days a week.  I've been just too tired to swim.  But I decided to swim today.  Slept in to 8 and missed swimming with the gang but wanted to.  I just wanted to do my own thing.  Nothing to hard just something to push me to fatigue at the end but a steady paced workout.

Started off with 200 Swim then 200 Pull w/o Paddles.

10x50's Pulling w/ Paddles on 60 (500/900)

1 :40.2 50 1:20

8 :39.2 50 1:19
9 :39.5 50 1:19
10 :40.3 50 1:20

10x50's Kick on 60 (5 free / 5 back) (500/1400)

4x50's IM Switches on 60 (200/1600)

1 :41.5 50 1:22
2 :49.5 50 1:39
3 :59.6 50 1:59
4 :59.6 50 1:37

2 1:28.3 100 1:28
3 1:29.0 100 1:29
4 1:27.4 100 1:28
5 1:30.0 100 1:30

16x50's Pulling w/Paddles on 60 (800/2900)

1 :39.9 50 1:19
2 :39.3 50 1:19
3 :39.8 50 1:20
4 :39.1 50 1:18
5 :39.1 50 1:18
6 :38.8 50 1:17
7 :38.7 50 1:17
8 :39.7 50 1:19
9 :38.2 50 1:17
10 :39.1 50 1:18
11 :39.3 50 1:19
12 :38.0 50 1:16
13 :39.8 50 1:20
14 :39.0 50 1:18
15 :41.0 50 1:22
16 :40.7 50 1:21

And that was it.  I was beat. My arms, shoulders, chest and back decided to call it quits.  I felt great and would have loved to swim more but didn't want to kill me since I haven't been swimming.  The pool temp was great.  I felt great.  I so miss swimming.

S0. 2900 yards is not bad not great but not bad.  A start or restart, my 2000th restart of swimming.

I got a week to make this NOT the worst month of 2014.  I'll try and swim one day during the week and next Sunday.  2014 is turning to be the worst year for me swimming.  Well at least since I restarted swimming 10 years ago.

Another 30 Minute Lap Swim

Ahhh...3 day weekend.  Well a 2 day weekend for me as I worked on Saturday.  I slept in a little bit and then watched some Simpsons so by the time I got to the pool only had 30 minutes of lap swim time before water aerobics.  I was hoping they weren't having aerobics due to the holiday but they started to take the lane lines out while we were swimming so only got 30 minutes in.

So not much of a workout as a 30 minute warm up.

1 2:50.0 200 1:25
2 :39.7 50 1:19
3 :40.3 50 1:21

15 :37.7 50 1:16
16 :37.4 50 1:15
17 :36.8 50 1:14

200 easy free then 16x50's pulling w/ paddles on 60 seconds.  1,000 yards.  At least I got in a swim.  I'd love to swim again later today in one of the other lap swims but that won't happen.  My workout week is crazy with teaching  classes and personal training so no swim this week.  At least I doubt it.

Quick Morning Swim

Ahh..sleeping in to 6am!  Luckily my early morning clients are on one last summer trip so I don't have to be into work/gym to a bit later so I went for a swim.  I knew I only had about 30 minutes but I'd be with the swim gang so I'd get a good quick swim in.

I can't get my Garmin Swim info to show up on Garmin Connect.  New computer and all so here is the workout without times/splits.

Warm Up

Mixed 500 then a 100 Pull/Kick/Kick/Swim (600)

Free Set:

4x150's on 2:45 (I did free they did stroke, hey I haven't been swimming!) (600/1200)

1st one the 1st 50 was fast

2nd one the 2nd 50 was fast

3rd one the 3rd 50 was fast

4th one all fast

Breast Stroke Set:

2x100's Breast on 2:10.  It was to be 4 but I had to leave. (200/1400)

So 1,400 yards isn't great but it's better then nothing.

At least August was better then July.  I'll try this again on Thursday. Hopefully my data will pop up and I'll add in splits later.  But it's a long day at work to go ahead of me.

A Not-So-Workout Swim Workout

Oy!  96F air temp 89F water temp!  Ouchie!  But I haven't swam in almost two weeks so I had to swim something.  I got to the pool and realized I once again put on my Garmin GPS Running watch not my Garmin Swim watch.  Ugh!  That and I had no battery for the deck clock.  So I just sorta swam and counted rest times.

Warm Up

200 Swim

200 Kick

Free Set:

5x100's Pulling about 15 seconds rest

IM Set:

5x100's IM about 15 secs rest

So 1,400 yards is better then nothing.  I'm going to try to swim on Thursday but we will see.  These afternoon thunderstorms keep me dry most afternoons.

Yesterday's Swim Workout #throwbackthursday

It's #throwbackthursday in that I'm posting my swim from yesterday. Yesterday was a very long day as WedswimI worked at 2 of the gyms here filling in.  I taught Group Power at 5:45am and since I had sometime and was right next door to a rec center pool I gave my self some swim time.  Oy!  I was beat from the lifting in Power but did an easy workout.

Warm Up:

400 Swim

Ahead of July and gaining on Jan!  I wont swim to Sunday but I'll try to swim a little extra then!

Is A 30 Minute Swim Worth It? Hell Yeah!

It looks like I'm on a roll with 2 swims in one week, hell one month!  Mind you it wasn't much of a swim today.  It's not only hot outside it's hot in the pool.  The water temp was 89F and swimming in the noon time sun wasn't a good thing.  So I just putz'ed around a bit.  I figure any swim is better then no swim.

Now the fine folks over at Triathlete Europe asks "Is A 30-Minute Swim Session Long Enough?"  The article has 2 swim coaches debating the topic.  I don't agree on everything said in the article but one coach broke down a typical 60 minute workout as "In a typical 60-minute Masters workout, most athletes can complete a good warm-up, a technique-improvement set, an aerobic or anaerobic set and finish with a cool-down. Those are the four components of any successful trip to the pool."  PutzedWhich all in all is great but for most Triathlete or Master Swimmers our time is limited and may not be able to swim 60 minutes workout during the work week.  A few 30 minute workout during the week with 15 minutes warm up and drill and 15 minutes of high-intensity short-interval is good enough.  Just as long they are doing longer workouts on the weekend.  With that said my 30 minute workout...

Warm Up:

Putzed around for a 300 then pulled with paddles a 100.

Main (ONLY) Set:

4 Rounds of 4x50's on 60.  IM Switches

Fly/Back, 50 Back, Back/Breast, Breast/Free the extra 50 back was my sunbathing time.

1    :41.4     50     1:23
2    1:29.4     50     1:46
3    :46.3     50     1:33
4    :43.4     50     1:27
5    :46.1     50     1:32
6    :49.5     50     1:39
7    :46.3     50     1:33
8    :42.0     50     1:24
9    :46.3     50     1:33
10    :50.8     50     1:42
11    :46.3     50     1:33
12    :42.8     50     1:26
13    :45.4     50     1:31
14    :50.0     50     1:40
15    :46.9     50     1:34

I will admit the first 4 were not on an interval as I was chatting with the swimmers getting out of the pool from the retired folks swim team.  I had suggested sculling paddles to a couple of the swimmers the other week and they wanted to show me them.

So a 1,200 yard 30 Minute workout.  Not bad.

The Once A Month Swim Workout

It's been way too long without swimming.  Almost a month!  Oy!  I set my alarm this morning to go swimming but pressed snooze way too many times.  Finally at 7:17 I got out of bed put on a swim suit Sunswimand just headed to the pool.  The gang on Sunday meet up at 7:30am and I was the first at the pool.  I thought maybe they no longer got together.  I was about to go home and back to bed then one arrived.

Nothing great but without swimming for almost a month I'm beat.  The pool water temp was in the high 80's F.  The F stands for FUCKIN' HOT!  But I got in 2,000 yards.  That is more then I swim on my own when I get to the pool for lunch hour swims.

July was just a sad month!  4,000 yards for the month basically.  That's like one long swim workout.  May was the only descent month this year.  I know August won't be great.  Oh well.  At least I'm swimming sorta and some of the time.

Barelly Swimming So Let's Blame It On The Thunder

I wouldn't call my swim today a workout.  I got to the pool, jumped in and then released I had my Garmin GPS watch and not my Garmin Swim watch on.  Doh!  I only had 30 minutes and I really didn't feel like swimming so I just goofed off doing laps.

100 Free Swim

then 8x50's Pulling w/ Paddles

Then I started to do switched

50 Fly/Back

50 Back/Breast

50 Breast/Free

50 Free/Fly

I told myself I had to swim at least a 1,000 yards but stopped about 900 yards in.  Mostly cuz' two ladies from the swim team asked me to help them with butterfly.  So I took less then 10 mintues to go over some butterfly. I just got out of the pool when I heard the thunder so I would of had to get out anyways.

I was really in the pool just to get some stress release.  I haven't been in the pool in a week so I just wanted to get wet.  Hopefully I'll swim a workout this weekend.  I'm working early am's the next 3 days with teaching classes then working the fitness floor at 8am so no swim for me.

Oh, yeah!  Actually the pool temp was better then the other day but still had the hot sun on me.  Decided I do some 50's pulling on an easy interval to keep my body temp down.
