Team USA swimmer and five-time Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin will visit A Great Good Place for Books in Montclair Village on Dec. 10 to launch her new book, “Relentless Spirit: The Unconventional Raising of a Champion.

Lane 2 - Sport 24 posts "SA swimmer, water polo player banned. A South African swimmer and water polo player have been banned after failing drug tests. Swimmer Louisa de Jongh and water polo player Jabulani Sibiya have both been served with two-year bans by the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS)."

Suffering a little injury so no swimming today but I did go golfing instead.  After 9 holes of land golf I'm so much better when I stay in the pool.  Hopefully I'll be back to swimming by next weekend.  Till then here is some Swim Bits...

Interview with FINA President Dr. Julio C. Maglione

Under the motto "Sharing the Magic of Team Sports", FINA organised the FINA World Water Polo Conference on February 27-28, 2014 in Cancun (MEX), in co-operation with the Mexican Swimming Federation.

This was a unique opportunity for FINA's Water Polo family to hear from established team sports, newly popular sports, and representatives from the Water Polo family about the new and innovative ideas they have used to ensure continued success.


Monday's Swim Report - An End For British Water Polo & Other Swim Bits

Lane 1 - The Vancouver Sun posts "Olympic swimmer Brent Hayden gets creative with a camera. The former Olympic swimmer is focused on a career in photography. An exhibition of his work opens Tuesday, March 11 at Foot of Main Gallery, 119 Main at Alexander."

Lane 2 - The West Australian posts "Olympic star happy to invest in safety. Eamon Sullivan still remembers his first and only day as a surf lifesaving nipper."

Lane 3 - The Telegraph posts "Italian and European swim chief faces fraud claim. The president of the Italian swimming federation, Paolo Barelli, has offered to resign if fraud accusations directed at him are proved true in an escalating feud with the country's Olympic committee. CONI, the Olympic committee, denounced the swimming federation in court last month after an internal audit cast doubt on the use of more than €800,000 (around $1 million) that was intended for pool improvements for the 2009 swimming world championships in Rome."

Lane 4 - BBC posts "British water polo: National champions insist future is bright.  After losing £4.5m in funding from UK Sport, British water polo is fighting to keep its head above water. Of all the sports to be subject to a funding cut since London 2012, only basketball has suffered a bigger reduction."

Lane 3 - Inside The Games posts "Paralympic swimmer Long to feature in NBC documentary tracing Russian roots.  Twelve-times Paralympic swimming champion Jessica Long is to be the subject of a new documentary broadcast by NBC during its coverage of the Sochi 2014 Olympics this weekend, which will follow the athlete as she travels back to Russia to trace her roots."

Lane 3 - Baltimore Ravens posts "Michael Phelps Taking Over Ravens Twitter Account.  Our Twitter followers are in store for a treat this weekend.  We have decided to hand over the keys – well, technically the password – to our Twitter account to 18-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps (@MichaelPhelps) for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.  The Baltimore native and long-time Ravens fanwill be in attendance at M&T Bank Stadium, and he’ll share his perspective with fans on the @Ravens Twitter account. This will be the first time the Ravens have ever done a Twitter takeover."

Lane 6 - WBIR posts "Olympic medalists, nation's top swimmers compete in Knoxville.  Several Olympic gold medalists will compete alongside hometown favorites this weekend in East Tennessee.  It's part of USA Swimming's 2013 Winter National Championships being held at the University of Tennessee's Allan Jones Aquatic Center from December 5-7.  Some gold medalists scheduled to compete include: Missy Franklin, Katie Ledecky, Natalie Coughlin, Nathan Adrian, Matt Grevers, and Cullen Jones."

Lane 7 - The Longest Swim posts "Ben Lecomte Conquering the Pacific.  Ben Lecomte will conquer the Pacific Ocean, swimming from Tokyo, Japan to San Francisco, U.S.A., in the summer of 2014. Ben set the record for the first man to swim the Atlantic in 1998."

Lane 8 - The Almanac posts "Olympic outreach.  Olympic gold-medal winner is drawing Belle Haven girls and families into aquatic sports.  Since February, gold-medal winner Brenda Villa has been head of acquatic outreach for Menlo Swim and Sport, which runs swimming programs at Menlo Park's two community pools, Belle Haven and Burgess. Now, she's also head of the Mavericks Youth Water Polo program."


Sunday's Swim Report - Meet The Kings And Queens Of The Swimming Universe

Lane 1 - The San Luis Obispo Tribune posts "Olympic star Missy Franklin makes Cal debut at Cal Poly swim meet.  So, Franklin’s college swimming career began Friday for Cal, and it kicked off in San Luis Obispo at Cal Poly’s King and Queen of the Pool meet."

Lane 2 - Aqualillies posts "Trying on Esther Williams' swimsuits.  Aqualillies at Esther Williams' house trying on suits from her collection."

Lane 3 - M Live posts "Davis Tarwater, Kara Lynn Joyce bring Olympic medals, experience to help Saginaw youth swimmers.  Davis Tarwater watched, just one of the many, as the four members of the United States 800-meter freestyle accepted their gold medals and listened to the Davis_tarwater_swim_tournational anthem at the 2012 London Olympics.  But the former University of Michigan swimmer knew that there were more than four swimmers and more than four gold medals.  Tarwater brought his gold medal to Heritage High School for the Fitter and Faster Swim Tour, a swim clinic Saturday that attracted 54 swimmers, ages 6 to 16."

Lane 4 - The Monitor posts "Olympian Soni makes impact on Valley swimmers.  On Saturday, Soni emphasized having fun and fundamentals. She implored her students to swim through their core, wade with the proper hand movements and fall forward in the water while not scrunching the shoulders.  Every September, McAllen Memorial swim coach Roxanne Balducci and the McAllen Swim Club bring in a prominent swimmer or coach to host a clinic. In previous years, Ricky Berens, Chloe Sutton, Brendan Hansen and Eddie Reese have made the trek."

Lane 5 - M Live posts "Olympic swimmers visit East Grand Rapids: 'We just want them to see the dreams that are in front of them'.   Olympic medal winning swimmers Brendan Hansen and Kim Vandenberg have competed all around the world and have shined in the sport’s biggest and hottest spotlights.  The two agreed Saturday that the pools that they are most comfortable in, though, are the ones in which they are teaching children how to best follow their own dreams.  The East Grand Rapids Waves Swim Club hosted the Mutual of Omaha Breakout Swim Clinic on Tracy_plungeSaturday at EGR High School, and Hansen and Vandenberg were guests. The two worked with over 100 children, providing instruction on performance techniques."

Lane 6 - Tracy Press posts "Of swimming pools past, future.  I tuned in the City Council meeting Tuesday night on Channel 26 and watched and listened to the discussion of what kind of an aquatic center could eventually wind up in Tracy.  And as several members of the council indicated, the discussion has gone on a long, long time without any decision being made to move the process along toward actual development.  The Tracy Plunge, shown in 1954, was a busy place during the summer months from its opening in 1931 through 1986, when it was closed with the opening of the community swimming pool — later named for Recreation Director Joe Wilson — in Dr. Powers Park."
